Trump’s Global Ambitions: Greenland Annexation, Canada Next?

In a provocative new interview, Donald Trump reignited his push to annex Greenland, even suggesting that military action remains a possible route. He stressed that while he’s not planning an invasion, he won’t rule out the idea.

Trump emphasized Greenland’s importance to U.S. security interests, citing its Arctic position and valuable natural resources. “We need Greenland very badly,” he said, assuring that its small population would be respected under U.S. governance.

He acknowledged that annexing the territory is unlikely but reaffirmed that the option is still on the table. Trump has made similar statements in the past, despite firm opposition from both Denmark and Greenland.

Strategically, Greenland sits at the heart of key global shipping lanes and defense corridors. It also contains untapped reserves of critical resources such as rare earth metals, oil, and natural gas—elements increasingly in demand as technology and energy needs evolve.

Greenland’s leadership has responded forcefully to Trump’s comments. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen insisted the island’s future lies in its own hands, rejecting any notion of external control.

Trump’s territorial ambitions have extended beyond Greenland. He has also made comments about incorporating Canada into the U.S., sparking political controversy north of the border. Prime Minister Mark Carney won re-election on a wave of anti-Trump sentiment.

Though Trump now claims military action against Canada is “highly unlikely,” he suggested the topic could arise during Carney’s upcoming visit to the White House. “It would be a cherished state,” Trump said of Canada, leaving critics wondering whether his annexation talk is more than just political theater.
